SHC-NM provides Service Coordination at our properties and in our housing voucher programs to provide guidance to our residents in selecting appropriate services.
Service Coordinators conduct needs and eligibility assessments for benefits and then design a menu of relevant services to recommend. Service Coordinators then provide guidance in selecting appropriate services, conduct regular home visits and/or monthly meetings, facilitate on-site educational classes, provide referrals, and assist with the application process for mainstream benefits and services such as mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, educational opportunities, and job training programs.
Why Supportive Services?
Housing First in general and Service Coordination in particular advances a compassionate and fiscally responsible intervention that benefits not only the health, welfare, and safety of the individuals served but the entire community. When people experiencing homelessness get permanently housed and receive supportive services they are highly likely to stay housed and can therefore focus on their physical, mental, and emotional needs. Studies reveal that housing stability improves a person’s health and social status and reduces utilization of hospitals, jails, and emergency services at public expense.
Supportive Service Partners
SHC-NM works with a number of local service agencies, including its founding member agencies, to offer and refer supportive services to participants in our housing programs. These agencies offer a comprehensive supportive services system and a range of housing settings for homeless people with behavioral health disorders, including street outreach, mental health counseling, medical and dental care, emergency drop-in services, life skills training, transportation assistance and assistance with accessing other social and health benefits:
