Service-Learning & Community Outreach
SHC-NM advocates for and builds grass roots awareness for Housing First, the nationally recognized, evidence-based approach to reducing homelessness through its school and business based “Housing First! The Key is Housing” Service-Learning and Community Outreach programs. Our objective is to expand public awareness and support for Housing First as the dominant public policy strategy for ending homelessness. This is a year-round effort.
Service-Learning Project – Elementary grade classrooms and middle and high school service clubs learn about the causes and effects of homelessness and are given an opportunity to get involved in the mission of SHC-NM. Area businesses have the opportunity to sponsor a school and provide volunteers.
Using SHC-NM provided course materials, teachers or volunteers engage individual elementary grade classrooms or middle and high school service clubs in discussions about the effects of homelessness on children and their families and introduce Housing First.
In the school setting, where some students may be experiencing homelessness, students will learn that there are many reasons a family may be homeless and that being in stable, safe housing is a necessary first step to preventing the downward spiral that often happens when people become homeless. As a part of the learning experience, students have an opportunity to reflect upon and contribute to the mission of SHC-NM.
